The period of abnormally cold weather will end on February 3. This is the forecast for the first week of February issued by the Komi Center for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring.
This will be facilitated by the emergence of two cyclonic vortices: one over the Arctic seas and a second, more active one of Balkan origin. Accompanied by snowfalls, both will gradually displace the chilly air until midweek, raising the air temperature to the normal level and even slightly above it. However, events will develop so rapidly that a return of cold weather is likely as the cyclones move eastward.
Thus, on February 1-2, frosts of -25 to -32°C will persist, with temperatures in the center and east of the republic still reaching -33 to -38°C, with temperatures dropping another 5 to 10°C in traditional low-lying areas at night and in the morning. Then, starting in the far south, snowfalls will occur, and temperatures will rise briefly and level off across the region: an average of -12 to -20°C.
